GROUP THERAPY IN MIAMI

The Power of Groups: Connections, Support and Knowledge.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

Do you wish your teen had more of a sense of community in their life instead of feeling alone while learning how to handle emotions?

Group therapy is different from individual therapy because the sessions take place in a group setting run by a therapist. In group sessions, teens are able to share their thoughts and experiences, to the extent they feel comfortable while they receive support from the therapist and others in the group who understand what they’re going through.

Group therapy provides valuable mental health support from a skilled clinician along with a sense of community from others going through similar challenges.

DBT Groups

Have your teen learn and practice DBT Skills to improve their quality of life:

  • They’ll develop emotional awareness: gain a deeper understanding of their emotions so they feel less overwhelmed and can respond effectively to life challenges.

  • They’ll learn healthy coping strategies to manage intense emotions resulting from interpersonal conflict, disappointing situations, criticism, etc.

  • They’ll improve communication so you can express what they need and say how they feel in a way that improves relationships.

Our groups are a great addition to any treatment process. To join a DBT Skills Group teens don’t have to be part of our DBT program. If they see another therapist or don’t have one but are interested in our group only options, reach out to us for more information.

Group Details:

We offer different group dates/times online/in-person options for your convenience:

  • DBT Skills Group for adolescents meeting weekly over the course of 24 weeks. Open to adolescents not participating in our DBT program.

  • This 8-week group is for all parents interested in supporting and promoting their teen’s mental wellness. Rooted in DBT Skills but also incorporating other evidence based approaches, group participation will provide parents with the skills they need to understand, connect and support their teens through their mental health journey.

This group is open to all parents, including those whose teens are not seen by clinicians in our practice. Whenever possible, we encourage both parents to attend all sessions.

  • In this group, parents and caregivers of teens in our DBT program learn skills that are aligned with the DBT-A modules so they can support and reinforce DBT skills at home. The groups meet weekly for 90 minutes, 6 week duration. Pre-requisite: Parenting Mental Wellness.

If you are a provider and would like more information about referring your 1:1 clients to our groups while you still see them for individual therapy, please send us a note so we can get back to you with more information.

What are DBT Skills?

DBT Skills provide teens with the tools they need to navigate their feelings, thoughts and behaviors more skillfully. These are the four groups of skills teens will learn and practice:

Mindfulness: Become more present, reduce worry & rumination, increase enjoyment of daily life & increase focus and attention.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: Ask for what they need, learn to say no, build healthy relationships & reduce conflict.

Distress Tolerance: Regain control, learn to relax & soothe, effectively manage difficult events, accept what they can’t change and solve.

Middle Path: Identify and move away from black and white thinking, see situations from multiple perspectives, develop psychological flexibility

Emotion Regulation: Build healthy habits, understand their emotions, increase self control, decrease suffering.
