TRAUMA THERAPY IN MIAMI

Trauma Therapy helps you feel “unstuck.”

WHAT IS TRAUMA?

Trauma leaves invisible scars that get in the way of life.

Unresolved trauma is painful in many aspects. It results from the exposure to an event, series of events or set of circumstances that are experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening and has lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, social, emotional, physical or spiritual wellbeing. Traumatic experiences can occur at any age and can happen to any of us, whether it’s:

  • A car accident

  • A relationship betrayal

  • Abuse or neglect

  • The sudden death of a loved one

  • A violent criminal act

  • Exposure to the violence of war

  • A natural disaster

Trauma responses are normal reaction to abnormal situations. While we all respond in similar ways in the presence of danger, our reactions afterwards differ greatly. Some people are able to recover from trauma and bounce back with resiliency on their own, but many others struggle to identify and process their trauma in healthy ways.

Our bodies remember the sensations we experienced during the traumatic event and the effects of lasting trauma can cause a person to live with deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or post-traumatic stress far after the event has passed.

Skilled support and guidance from a knowledgeable therapist can help you cope with your trauma so you can move on and live with more joy and freedom.

WHAT TRAUMA LOOKS LIKE

Is trauma therapy right for you?

Trauma symptoms often fall into one or more of these four categories:

Avoidance

Do you avoid specific locations, sights, situations, and sounds that serve as reminders of a painful event from your past? Does anxiety, depression, numbness, or guilt weigh on you for reasons you don’t quite understand?

Re-experiencing

Do you frequently struggle with intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks? Do you have intense, disturbing thoughts related to the experience that come from out of nowhere?

Hyperarousal

Are you quick to anger, frequently irritable, or hypervigilant? Is your reaction to stressful situations often aggressive, reckless, or does it include self-harm? Do you regularly struggle with sleeping? Are you short-tempered and easily startled?

Negative Mood & Cognitive Issues

Do you have a loss of interest in activities that were once considered enjoyable? Do you have difficulty remembering the details of a distressing event? Have you noticed habit or behavior changes since an upsetting experience? Are you stuck in an endless loop of mental rumination?

Our Treatment Approach: Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

ART is a unique approach to eye movement therapy which guides the client to replace the negative images in the brain that trigger strong physical and emotional reactions with positive images of the client’s choosing.

ART therapy incorporates the use of rapid eye movements, similar to the ones that occur during dreaming, along with techniques incorporated from other evidence based practices resulting in a much faster and effective approach than other eye-movement therapies, such as EMDR. It’s very specific and directive approach can achieve rapid recovery from symptoms and reactions that may have been present for years.

One of the special aspects of ART is that when clients replace their negative images with positive ones, they don’t need to talk to the therapist about any details of the trauma. Once the images have been replaced, the triggers will be gone. Nightmares and intrusive thoughts will stop. This makes the therapy easier on the client which often refer to ART as a calming and joyful treatment.
