TREATMENT FOR BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER IN MIAMI

Are your intense emotions getting in the way of living the life you desire?

WHAT IS BPD?

BPD is characterized by unstable moods, behavior and relationships.

People who experience BPD feel emotions intensely and for extended periods of time, and it is harder for them to return to a stable baseline after an emotionally triggering event. This difficulty can lead to impulsivity, poor self-image, stormy relationships, and intense emotional responses to stressors. Struggling with self-regulation can also result in dangerous behaviors such as self-harm (e.g. cutting).

It’s estimated that 1.6% of the adult U.S. population has BPD, but the real number may be as high as 5.9%. Nearly 75% of people diagnosed with BPD are women, however recent research suggests that men may be equally affected by BPD but are commonly misdiagnosed with PTSD or depression.

BPD TREATMENT

Working with a qualified therapist is imperative.

Our team is experienced and highly trained in working with people suffering from BPD.

  • Although at one time experts believed that BPD was unlikely to respond to treatment, research published in 2017 has shown that BPD is very treatable. Getting help from a mental health professional is critical because, with consistent treatment, you can live a better quality of life with fewer or no symptoms.

  • Since BPD is associated with risky behavior, self-harm, and suicide, treatment can also help change these behaviors. However, make sure you find someone who specializes in BPD because you will need treatments that are targeted specifically to BPD. If you aren't getting the right treatment, it may not be as effective.

  • Research shows that dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is effective for people diagnosed with BPD.  It focuses on teaching coping skills to combat counterproductive urges, regulate emotions, and improve relationships. Involving individual and group work, DBT encourages practicing mindfulness techniques such as meditation, regulated breathing, and self-soothing as well as healthy coping skills to manage intense emotions.

  • DBT has been shown to be effective in reducing suicidal behavior, psychiatric hospitalization, treatment dropout, substance abuse, anger, and interpersonal difficulties. We rave about it because it works!
