What Happens in Your First Neurofeedback Therapy Session in Miami

We ask about sleep, concentration, emotional reactivity, anxiety, trauma history, and any diagnoses you've received. For teens especially, parents are usually part of this conversation too. If a 15-year-old is coming in because they can't stay regulated long enough to get through a school day, that context matters. A lot.

You'll also talk about your goals. "I want to feel less anxious" is a fine starting point, but the more specific we can get together ("I want to stop waking up at 3 am with my heart pounding" or "I want to get through an argument without shutting down completely"), the more clearly we can track whether training is moving things in the right direction.

This part of the session typically runs 30 to 45 minutes.

The Brain Map: What a qEEG Actually Involves

After the intake, many first neurofeedback sessions include a qEEG, which stands for quantitative electroencephalogram. It sounds complicated. The experience itself is straightforward.

You'll sit in a chair while a clinician places a cap or a set of small sensors on your scalp. These sensors measure electrical activity across different regions of your brain. They record; they don't transmit. Nothing goes into your brain. Think of it like a thermometer: it reads a temperature; it doesn't change it.

The recording takes about 20 minutes. You'll be asked to sit with your eyes open for part of it and eyes closed for another part. You might notice a faint gel on the sensors. Some people feel a little self-conscious about the cap. Most people are surprised by how relaxed they feel once it's actually on.

The resulting data gets compared to a normative database, meaning your brain's activity patterns get measured against what's typical for your age group. This is how we identify areas of dysregulation, places where your brain might be overactivating, underactivating, or showing irregular communication between regions. That map becomes the foundation for your training plan. It's not a diagnosis, but it does give us something concrete to work from rather than guessing.

For teens who are already in therapy for anxiety, emotional dysregulation, or ADHD, the qEEG often gives us new information that talk therapy alone doesn't surface.

The First Training Mind and Session: Sitting With Your Brain

If there's time after the brain map, or sometimes it's scheduled as a second appointment, the actual neurofeedback training begins.

The setup looks like this: sensors go back on, connected to software that monitors your brainwave activity in real time. You'll face a screen. On that screen, you'll typically watch a video or a visual display. When your brain produces the target brainwave patterns, the video plays clearly. When it drifts, the screen dims or pauses.

You're not consciously controlling any of this. That's the part that surprises most people. You don't have to think your way to the right state. Your brain simply receives feedback, moment by moment, and gradually begins to self-correct. It's a learning process at the neurological level, and it happens largely below conscious awareness.

A typical training session runs 30 minutes. During that time, most people feel calm, sometimes a little drowsy. A few people feel slightly alert or notice a mild pressure sensation in the first session or two. These responses settle as the protocol is fine-tuned.

After the session, a clinician will check in with you. How do you feel? Did anything feel off? Sometimes people notice a difference right away, a quieter mind, a little more ease in their body. Sometimes nothing feels notably different yet. Both are normal. Neurofeedback is cumulative. What Happens After You Leave

What Makes Neurofeedback a Good Fit (and When It Might Not Be)

Neurofeedback tends to be a strong fit for people who have tried other approaches and still feel stuck. That includes teens and adults dealing with anxiety that doesn't respond fully to therapy or medication, attention and focus difficulties, sleep disruption, trauma responses that stay in the body even after processing the memory, and emotional dysregulation that feels more physiological than situational.

Wear something comfortable. You'll be sitting for 60 to 90 minutes total.
